Completed in 1859, the name Big Ben actually refers more to the 13.5 ton bell within the tower that chimes at every hour and is said to have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall,Commissioner of Works at the time. Over 96 metres high and 12 metres square wide, Big Ben is the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world. Loved by all Londoners, the first BBC radio broadcast of the Big Ben chimes was on New Year's Eve, 1923. The numbers on the clock faces are each two feet high with an inscription in Latin below each clock face translated reads as "God save our Queen Victoria I".
