Christmas Traditions in England

As the Christmas season slowly begins and the celebrations start to come alive around England we look at some of the marvellous and unique traditions that have been associated with this festive time for many years.

Christmas Dates

Christmas in England began its existence around AD 596, when St Augustine and her monks brought Christianity to the Anglo Saxons, however it was only during the reign of Queen Victoria that people began celebrating the Christmas Holidays with Father Christmas, trees, crackers, carols and cards. It was the wealth generated by the industrial revolution during the Victorian ages that gave middle class families in England & Wales the chance to take time off and celebrate Christmas Day & Boxing Day.

“Boxing Day” is on the 26 December and gets its name from the servants and working people who opened their boxes of gifts and charity collected from the rich. It is officially a national holiday and is also the start to the season’s biggest shopping sales around the country.

Christmas Food & Drink

Traditionally, Christmas dinner in England is eaten at around mid-day on Christmas day and consists of roast turkey, goose or chicken, vegetables like potatoes and Brussel sprouts and sauces like bread sauce and cranberry sauce. Turkey had been brought to England from America in 1526 and became popular for Christmas Dinners by the end of the Victorian era.

Christmas pudding originates from an old, Celtic dish known as 'frumenty' and was first made as a kind of thick soup with raisins and wine in it. Christmas Celebrations

Christmas Carols have their roots in medieval England and were first introduced to church services by St Francis of Assisi. Christmas Cards were the idea of Sir Henry Cole who commercially sold Christmas cards from his art shop in London after “The Penny Post” was introduced in Britain allowing people to post letters or cards anywhere around the country.

Christmas crackers were invented by Thomas Smith, a London sweet maker in 1846. He had wrapped up gifts and added a snapper that went BANG when pulled open before the Christmas Meal. The crackers are used to decorate the Christmas table and usually have a tissue paper hat, a balloon, a funny joke or a small gift inside it.

The Christmas tree is possibly one of the most popular Christmas icons and grew extremely popular when Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, brought fir tree to the Royal Family from his native Germany around the 19th Century. In England, many people put up a Christmas trees in their homes (including many non-Christians). These may be either real trees (sold in garden centres) or artificial ones (sold in department stores). These will be put up in living rooms and then adorned with baubles, tinsel, fairy lights and topped with a star or angel, representing the story of the birth of Christ.

Mistletoes were considered sacred by people of ancient Britain and became associated with kissing during the 18th century, when it was used to decorate the Kissing Ball ornament at Christmas parties. From then on, its evergreen leaves and association with kissing was used as a symbol of Christian love and eternal life.

Holly wreaths were given as gifts during the Roman festival Saturnalia, which is believed by many to be the festival from which Christmas was originally adapted. The green leaves of the holly plant have come to represent everlasting life and the berries the blood of Jesus.

The story of Santa Claus originates with St. Nicholas, a very hard-working saint who lived in Turkey, where he was bishop of the Turkish town of Myra in the early 4th century. The Dutch settlers made him into a Christmas gift-giver and brought him to America where he has eventually became known as Santa Claus. His now traditional red costume can be traced to Coca Cola advertising in America

Driving Tips for travellers visiting the UK

If you’re planning to get in the driving seat of a car in the UK then make sure you are aware of the systems and laws in place to ensure you have a safe and sound journey on the road. First of all, you will notice that in the UK, cars drive on the a left hand side, similar to Australia, India, Japan and the US Virgin Islands.

Take it slow and don’t rush to spin around the centre of town specially if you are used to the right hand side drive, because you might not get very far. Also try renting an automatic car to help you adjust to the new settings, although these can be priced higher than stick-operated vehicles. Make sure you check that you have a valid driving licence that covers the type of vehicle that you are driving and an appropriate insurance with valid road tax. Also make sure you don’t drive while using your mobile phone as this is against the law.

Next point to keep in mind is the metrics. Road distances are shown in miles or yards (MPH) and so are the UK Speed Limits. When filling petrol (gas) note that prices are listed in litres, and it takes about five litres to fill one British gallon so consider the distance you have to travel and whether it might just be cheaper taking another mode of transport like a coach or train.

Parking your car shouldn’t be too difficult if you read the signs. Most parking lots operate on a “Pay and Display” method where you pay for the duration you need to park at a nearby parking machine and place the ticket on the dashboard clearly visible to the parking warden. Besides the obvious “No Parking” signs you should also be aware of the yellow lines painted on the street. Double yellow lines = No parking ever ; Single yellow lines = Parking generally NOT allowed except during un-restricted hours only, usually after 6pm, check the sign ; Dashed yellow lines = parking allowed, but still check the signs for any time restrictions and still may need to 'pay & display.' ; No lines at all = you can park for free.

It is also advisable to always look out for speed limit signage. On motorways, the speed limit is usually 70mph, but on country roads it slows down to 40 or 50mph. And once you enter a village, the speed limit is never more than 30mph -- slower limits are posted. Watching your speed can help you avoid unnecessary tickets from Speed Cameras that are almost everywhere and take a picture or your car and plate while speeding. If you need to overtake or pass a car, keep in mind that you are only allowed to overtake on the right or the ‘fast’ lane. The "slow" lane is the outside (or in this case, the far left) lane. This is also the lane where you'll need to make your exits. Exits are very clearly marked and you'll have plenty of warning before your exit approaches.

Roundabouts are another UK road phenomenon that can sometimes be tricky for foreign visitors. A roundabout is a circular junction where all drivers give way to traffic on their right. All you need to keep in mind to slow down when coming to one and 'give way' to traffic already on the roundabout and If there's a car already on the circle, they have the right of way. Generally British drivers don’t yield, they ‘Give Way’ to traffic already on the road and acknowledge the courtesy of another driver letting you pass by a wave of thanks.

And finally the Congestion Charge. This is a charge imposed by the Transport of London body on most vehicles travelling into Central London on weekdays. The daily charge is £10/day and must be paid for in advance or before midnight that day in order to avoid a penalty. With superb public transport links in and around Central London, it is wise to avoid using a car unless you really need to, and use buses and taxis or underground trains.

With these basics, you should be able to get yourself on the go in no time. There is so much to see and explore in the UK from bustling city town centres, splendid country landscapes, quaint villages and charming English towns and a good road trip around England will surely be an enjoyable and unforgettable lifetime experience.

The city of London has always been a trading centre with unique and famous markets that have laid the foundations for its commercial growth and thriving economy. Business was never easy, so in an effort to stand out from the other market traders, the costermongers wore a distinctive style of attire that involved decorating their trousers, seams and waistcoats with rows of pearl buttons that, at the time, arrived by cargo from Japan (so it is believed). It was these “flashie” costumes along with their cheeky banter and infectious flamboyance that won them custom. As the city grew, costermongers began to choose leaders of the pack or “Coster Kings & Queens” who were elected to stand up for their rights and safeguard their territory. This new class of royalty were highly regarded for their strength and endurance and continued their legacy by passing on their inherit titles to their children.

However The “Pearly Suit” of the Costermongers really underwent a complete transformation when it was discovered by Henry Croft, a road sweeper and rat-catcher in the 1880s, who was inspired by the crowd pulling power of the accessory clad outfits and used this inspiration to create a costume completely adorned in pearls to raise money to help the poor and underprivileged. It was an instant success and combined the goodwill gesture of helping others with the pearly spirit and hearty entertainment.

The Pearlies went on to raise funds for many more institutions and honourable causes and are today fondly admired for being one of London’s long standing traditions, having contributed significantly to society, tourism, heritage and fashion. Pearly Kings and Queens are often seen fundraising around Covent Garden Market in Central London. Old Bailey Criminal Central Court

If the processes of law and justice take your fancy or you are just curious about the subject of criminal intent then head down to the Old Bailey Central Criminal Court in High Holborn for a chance to witness one of the 1500 serious cases being tried every year from the restricted access of the public viewing galleries.

The Old Bailey is one of the most famous criminal courts in the world and has been London’s principal criminal court for centuries. Located between Holborn Circus and St Paul's Cathedral, the Old Bailey is named on the road on which it stands which follows the line of the City's fortified wall (bailey). In medieval times, the site where the Old Bailey stands today was home to the Newgate Goal Stood, and until 1868 hangings took place in public outside Newgate itself. The original Old Bailey was built in 1539 and before being destroyed by the Great Fire was designed as an Italianate Brick Building with a open-air courtroom to minimize the spread of gaol fever which took the lives of many prisoners, judges and even the Lord Mayor at the time.

The Old Bailey we see today was designed by Edward Mountford and was opened in 1907 by King Edward VII. Inspired by St Pauls Cathedral nearby, the inside features magnificent marbled halls and a muraled dome above the court resides the statue of Lady Justice holding a sword in her right hand and weighing scales in her left.

The Old Bailey is steeped in history and has dealt with some of the most severe and high profile cases in the history of London. The oldest courtrooms of the Old Bailey are number one, two and three, and it is in within these walls that many famous people have stood trial including the likes of Oscar Wilde, The Krays and the Yorkshire Ripper.

While it is not publically a tourist attraction, the Old Bailey provides an intriguing insight into the past and present workings of the London courts and has also made an appearance in popular literature, television and film making it a very notable point of interest in the city’s heritage. In Charles Dicken's Tale of Two Cities, the Old Bailey is the courthouse named in the book where Charles Darnay is put on trial for treason.

The recent London Riots have momentarily dampened the mood of the city but definitely not its spirit. While these mindless and incomprehensive acts have been condemned by the government and residents of London, local communities have come together and risen above the wreckage, albeit in disbelief.

Originating from the very attitudes in which people went about their daily lives during a time of conflict and distress in Britain, the “Keep Calm & Carry On" Poster was an understatedly simple wartime propaganda, that today has transformed into a brand of its own and taken the shape of a wide range of paradoxical memorabilia and merchandise for the modern consumer. The poster was introduced by the British Government in 1939 during the Second World War in order to encourage civilians and military personnel to maintain morale and keep spirits high, but was only ever distributed in limited numbers or forgotten in storage.

The slogan was one of three distinctive designs of the time, created with the symbolic crown of King George VI set above a striking yet easily identifiable font against a bold courageous background that was designed by an unknown civil servant of whom, sadly there are no records or trace. Only two original copies are known to have survived.

Buckingham Palace Summer Exhibition 23 July - 3 October 2011

The excitement for one of this decade’s most significant events continues with the opening of this year’s Summer Exhibition at Buckingham Palace on 23rd July 2011. An estimated record breaking attendance of up to 650,000 people expected to visit Queen Elizabeth’s official London residence and get up close with the dress that transformed Kate Middleton into the Duchess of Cambridge when she wed Prince William on 29 April 2011 in Westminster Abbey.

Intricately crafted by Alexander Mcqueen’s Sarah Burton, this famous dress will be presented on a raised stage in the ornate palace ballroom where crowds will flock to catch a glimpse of the stunning ivory ensemble along with its matching handcrafted bridal shoes), the diamond acorn earrings gifted to her by her parents, the Cartier Halo tiara she wore that was loaned by the Queen, and a silk flower replica of her bridal bouquet are all showcased for close viewing.

The organisers and the exhibition curator Caroline de Guitaut, seen above adjusting the dress, are hoping to give all the visitors a true taste and experience of the royal wedding and have even included the Wedding cake behind a glass cabinet in the state dining room displaying where the royal newlyweds placed the knife on their wedding day. The exhibition will continue though till 3rd October 2011.
