U.K. Postcodes are unique and pinpoint the exact address

When you first arrive in London, you may be overwhelmed with just how much there is to see and do and experience in this vibrant and exciting city. But once you get yourself all settled in and start to take a closer look, you can discover many interesting facts about London that are unique and truly fascinating.

Like the London Postal Codes, for instance. Postal codes or “postcodes” are the U.K.’s version of Zip codes. They are an important part when sending mail as they are amazingly unique to each address along with the respective house number. Searching for a location with a UK Postcode is a surer way to find the address as opposed to using a street name which may be found in other areas too.

London postcodes are different from the usual postcodes around the country as they specifically correspond to compass locations using the official central point of Charing Cross Station in WC1 in the heart of London.During the 19th century population boom the city of London descended into disorder and chaos within the deliveries and sorting of the mail and demanded a more efficient arrangement for the postal system. It was not until a former teacher, Sir Rowland Hill, introduced a solution to divide the capital into 10 separate postal districts based around compass points within a circle of 12 miles radius from central London and in doing so brought about an enormous improvement to the circulation of the cities post.

No two postcodes are identical making it easy to locate the general area from the digits before the space and really pinpoint the address using the digits after the space. For example, 10 - SW1 2AA points exactly to 10, Downing Street in Westminster, the nation’s most popular address and home to the prime minister.

After the successful adoption of the compass postal code system, many other UK cities gradually began to implement it too like Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester & Glasgow amongst others.

Also interestingly, while post codes offer organisational divisions for postal services, they are different from London Boroughs that form the local governing administrative bodies.

In 2011, a new postcode “E20” was assigned to cover the Olympic Village area in preparation for the London Olympics 2012.

For some Londoners, postcodes play a crucial deciding factor when renting or buying a home. Postcodes can establish the “desirability” and reputation of an area and in turn affect the value of property sometimes leading to sky high asking prices for highly sought-after postcodes.

If you are travelling to London and want to stay in one of the more popular postcodes, Check-in-London offers a great selection of Budget, Mid-Range and Luxury Serviced Apartments in many great enviable addresses like W1 – Mayfair & Marylebone, WC1 – Bloomsbury, SW1 – Belgravia, SW3 – Chelsea, SW7 – Knightsbridge & South Kensington, W11 – Notting Hill, W2 – Bayswater.

Christmas Traditions in England

As the Christmas season slowly begins and the celebrations start to come alive around England we look at some of the marvellous and unique traditions that have been associated with this festive time for many years.

Christmas Dates

Christmas in England began its existence around AD 596, when St Augustine and her monks brought Christianity to the Anglo Saxons, however it was only during the reign of Queen Victoria that people began celebrating the Christmas Holidays with Father Christmas, trees, crackers, carols and cards. It was the wealth generated by the industrial revolution during the Victorian ages that gave middle class families in England & Wales the chance to take time off and celebrate Christmas Day & Boxing Day.

“Boxing Day” is on the 26 December and gets its name from the servants and working people who opened their boxes of gifts and charity collected from the rich. It is officially a national holiday and is also the start to the season’s biggest shopping sales around the country.

Christmas Food & Drink

Traditionally, Christmas dinner in England is eaten at around mid-day on Christmas day and consists of roast turkey, goose or chicken, vegetables like potatoes and Brussel sprouts and sauces like bread sauce and cranberry sauce. Turkey had been brought to England from America in 1526 and became popular for Christmas Dinners by the end of the Victorian era.

Christmas dinner is usually followed by rich fruit desserts like Christmas pudding, Christmas cake or mince pies served with brandy sauce or brandy butter. Christmas pudding originates from an old, Celtic dish known as 'frumenty' and was first made as a kind of thick soup with raisins and wine in it. Mince pies are usually the first sign of Christmas and are the modern descendant of the Christmas Pye often served with mulled wine.

Christmas Celebrations

Christmas Carols have their roots in medieval England and were first introduced to church services by St Francis of Assisi. Carols comes from the old French word Carole, meaning “ a song to accompany dancing” (projectbritain.com). Today groups of carollers, or carol singers go from house to house collecting for charity.

Christmas Cards were the idea of Sir Henry Cole who commercially sold Christmas cards from his art shop in London after “The Penny Post” was introduced in Britain allowing people to post letters or cards anywhere around the country.

Christmas crackers were invented by Thomas Smith, a London sweet maker in 1846. He had wrapped up gifts and added a snapper that went BANG when pulled open before the Christmas Meal. The crackers are used to decorate the Christmas table and usually have a tissue paper hat, a balloon, a funny joke or a small gift inside it.

The Christmas tree is possibly one of the most popular Christmas icons and grew extremely popular when Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, brought fir tree to the Royal Family from his native Germany around the 19th Century. In England, many people put up a Christmas trees in their homes (including many non-Christians). These may be either real trees (sold in garden centres) or artificial ones (sold in department stores). These will be put up in living rooms and then adorned with baubles, tinsel, fairy lights and topped with a star or angel, representing the story of the birth of Christ.

Mistletoes were considered sacred by people of ancient Britain and became associated with kissing during the 18th century, when it was used to decorate the Kissing Ball ornament at Christmas parties. From then on, its evergreen leaves and association with kissing was used as a symbol of Christian love and eternal life.

Holly wreaths were given as gifts during the Roman festival Saturnalia, which is believed by many to be the festival from which Christmas was originally adapted. The green leaves of the holly plant have come to represent everlasting life and the berries the blood of Jesus.

The story of Santa Claus originates with St. Nicholas, a very hard-working saint who lived in Turkey, where he was bishop of the Turkish town of Myra in the early 4th century. The Dutch settlers made him into a Christmas gift-giver and brought him to America where he has eventually became known as Santa Claus. His now traditional red costume can be traced to Coca Cola advertising in America

Celebrate Christmas in London and enjoy this magical time with food, drink, music, gifts, events, shows and lots of things to do including fantastic Ice skating rings, Christmas markets, Santa Grottos, Reindeer Petting and Carol Singing. If you have not booked your accommodation yet, why not stay in a Serviced Apartments and watch London come alive with festive cheer and spirit.

IRIS & E-Passports - Biometric Technology for Border Control in the UK

Contactless automated border controls are the future of travel and are now a growing part of a traveller’s experience. The high technology recognition software that enables a computer to indentify you by scanning your face, eye or fingerprint quickens the process of manual checks (in most cases) and saves time and resources for both the passenger and the border control agency.

The use of biometrics (commonly described as technology to identify people by physiological characteristics) is expanding rapidly and receiving huge investment globally. Even though its conception and first commercial application was back in 1984, it only now reaching its full potential which is not suprising with traveller numbers and security threats increasing all the time. Airports have had to step up their processes to enable smoother operations and speedy travel times without impeding the immigration process and bio-metric passport validation and identification seems to be the way forward.

If you are a passport holder of the UK or a country in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, chances are you can breeze through the airport when you visit the UK and forget all about the chaotic long winded queues in the arrivals hall thanks to the latest biometric technology now available at most UK airports. There are currently two automated border systems available, the IRIS – Iris Recognition Immigration System and the E-Passport gates.

The IRIS system scans the unique iris part of each person’s eye and converts a photograph of this pattern into a digital code that is compared with records on a secure database. Enrolment is required for this procedure and only persons aged 18 years and over are able to register.

The E-Passport gates are sometimes preferred over the IRIS system as they do not require any form of enrolment however they too are only available to persons aged 18 years and over. The E-passport gates are a self-service alternative to the conventional border checks using 3M RTE8000 Full Page Scanner technology to recognize and compare a person’s face to the photograph recorded on the ‘chip’ in their passport.

If either of these systems rejects your identification, you will still need to see a border officer who will provide a manual check.

If you are travelleing to UK and visiting London stay in an affordable Serviced Apartments or Short Stay Apartments.
Megabus Overnight Sleeper Coach

“England is a green & pleasant land” quote William Blake. From stunning coastlines to bustling city life and rural towns to historic villages and markets, the United Kingdom is a great destination for any traveller. London has been the starting point for many travellers wishing to travel and see other parts of the UK. With many international connections via its 5 airports and Eurostar Railway Station at Kings Cross, it is easy to find a route to London and then journey on to different parts of the country by coach, rail or air.

If you are restricted for time it is usually best to catch a train or plane to your destination, but if you are more adventurous then the good old coach is surely something you should give a try. Back in the day, The horse drawn stagecoach services used to be the main mode of transport for long distance travel until the arrival of the railways in 1830s and 1840s. The railways changed the way we travelled but the stagecoach and charabancs, as they were known, had always remained the people’s form of transport and continued to be used for short journeys and excursions until the 1950s. From its early origins, coach travel has come a long way and till today it is still a cheaper and more flexible mode of transport giving those who travel by it a great taste of freedom and exploration.

The recently launched budget sleeper coach by Stagecoach brings this form of travel into the 21 Century. A trial of the overnight sleeper coach service is to run between Glasgow and London and is to feature 24 bed berths, budget fares, free Wi-Fi, toilets and on-board refreshments. There are safety and security measures on board including CCTV and an emergency button to alert the driver. Every coach also meets the Transport for London’s new Low Emissions Zone (LEV) requirements making it a safe and environmentally friendly way to travel.

Stagecoach Group Chief Executive, Sir Brian Souter, said: “Travelling overnight is a great way to save time, and we’ve already seen growing demand for our night-time megabus.com journeys. The new sleeper services will offer extra comfort and facilities, but still at excellent value for money prices. Fares for a sleeper berth will range from £1 to £40 (all reservations are subject to a 50p booking fee)

Megabus.com is the UK’s primary budget inter-city coach service and operated its services from its main hub at Victoria Coach Station in London. Victoria is a popular address for business and leisure travellers and is also home to Buckingham Palace, the most famous royal palace in the world.

If you are travelling by coach from Victoria Coach Station and looking for accommodation nearby, why not try a self-catering serviced apartment. Check-in-London features a fantastic selection of serviced apartments in Victoria & Westminster.

Some travellers would choose Cleanliness over Security.

When travelling on business or leisure to a major metropolis city like London it is not uncommon to be concerned of the overall safety and security at the accommodation you have booked for your stay. With all the recent threats to peace and order in the world, travellers should be cautious and well-informed especially if the area they are visiting is experiencing or has experienced some form of disturbances like strikes, riots, terrorist activities or natural disasters even. But is this really on the top of a bookers priority list when choosing a hotel room or serviced apartment ? Maybe not.

Strangely a recent survey conducted on behalf of the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies has discovered that American Travellers (specifically) rank cleanliness (43%) over security (11%) as the most important factor when selecting a hotel. “Price and location were top factors for 23% and 19% of respondents, respectively,” the company said.

Jim Villa, a senior vice president and North American manager for Chubb’s Accident & Health business says “It seems that more people are concerned about housekeeping than security.” Perhaps the reason for this could be that the ratio of travellers (first time and frequent) who experience an unsatisfactory standard of cleanliness is much higher than those that encounter security issues during their stay. While it is always difficult to maintain hospitality and housekeeping standards across the board, at least it is reassuring to note that travellers do not feel that their personal safety is at risk.

Cleanliness and quality furnishings result in happy customers and repeat business which is what every hotel and serviced apartment wants at the end of the day. At Check-in-London we work only with professional managed properties that are maintained and operated by companies who provide a good and consistent standard of service that most travellers expect. We offer only the most reliable accommodation options in London so that you can enjoy a pleasurable experience during your stay in the Capital.

Serviced Apartments are perfect for short stays, corporate accommodation, holiday rentals and long term lets providing a range of modern conveniences including self-catering, spacious living areas, washer dryers and daily or weekly housekeeping to ensure you always have a clean and fresh home from home environment.

Lost Property in London

London is general a very safe and tourist friendly city and while most Londoner’s operate an “Honesty is the best policy” mantra, you still need to be aware of things around you and use common sense, as would in any other big metropolis in the world.

Taking some sensible precautions is the best way to enjoy the trip and stay safe while keeping your belongings safe too. But it is always a wise idea to be prepared for any unforeseen events during your stay including the loss of something valuable. These simple tips can help you whether you are visiting London for the first time, a frequent traveller or a local resident of the capital.

Out of Sight
Keeping your valuables out of sight and close to you is usually the best way to avoid any unnecessary attention. Don’t leave your things unattended or in the care of someone you do not know. Also avoid carrying large amounts of money or very expensive possessions.

Emergency Phone Numbers
Keep a handy list of phone numbers you would need if personal items go missing like credit cards, mobile phone, passport, travellers cheques and anything else you may be travelling with. Make sure you note down the international codes as well.

Photocopies
Always keep copies of your passport and any other important documents like driver’s license, insurance to show as identification in case you should loose the originals. Scanning them online or emailing them to yourself is also a great way to keep them safe and easily accessible in an emergency situation.

Serial Numbers
Most electronic gadgets as mobile phones, laptops, and mp3 players have unique serial numbers and can help your chances of finding an item should you misplace it. For mobile phones, each one has a unique IMEI number, which can be used to track or even block it from connecting to any mobile network in the country, thus rendering it useless to any thief.

Police
If any of your property is lost or stolen anywhere in London, you should first contact the nearest local Police Station. You can get this information by dialling 192. (Insurance claims always require a police reference number)

Transport in London
TFL ( Transport for London ) operates all public transport in London including the trains, buses, DLR, river boat and tram and has a TFL Lost & Found Office which operates a really comprehensive system to help unite missing property with its owners. To enquire about or collect your lost items you will have to go to the office yourself, but allow for 2 or 3 working days after the loss. You may need to provide a detailed description and complete an online form to report your missing item.

You are also quite likely to find your missing item should you leave it behind in a Black Taxi as they are usually quite honest and hand lost items to a police station who then hand it over to the TFL Lost Property Office.

The address for the TfL Lost & Found Office is:
TfL Lost Property Office, 200 Baker Street, London NW1 5RZ
Telephone number is: 0845 330 9882 (08:30-16:00, Monday-Friday except Bank Holidays)

So the next time you visit London, make sure you keep your belongings safe and secure while you explore and enjoy this wonderful city. These days, many travellers are choosing to stay in Serviced Apartments as it gives you more privacy and flexibility than a standard hotel room in London.

Golf in London

If you’re looking for a different way to relax and unwind your senses while you are in London, why not give the world-class sport of golf a try. The city’s fast pace life can often become overwhelming and a good chill out session of golf is a great way of getting some fresh air and a bit of exercise too., London is made up of acres of parks and serene landscaped areas, greater than any other city of its size in the world, so while most of the golf courses in the UK are nestled away in the countryside, it’s no wonder that London features some outstanding and beautiful golf courses.

Whether you’re a novice or professional or just looking for an entertaining family day out, golf is the perfect activity to enjoy the outdoors and get away from the stresses of everyday life. If you’re not entirely sure how to practice your putting, you can always take up some golf lessons or join a golfing school, but be sure to check the prices as training under a fully-qualified PGA golf professional can be quite expensive.

Golf can also create the perfect setting for corporate organisations to build relationships with clients, customers and colleagues with undisturbed and anxiety free surroundings that facilitate appointments, deals and opportunities while providing an excellent form of entertainment.

Some of the London golf courses include:
The Gastropub Experience

Originating in the late 20th Century, the Gastropub is one of the biggest food revolutions in Britain. It was coined in the heart of Clerkenwell, which is still home to some of the oldest Gastropubs in the city, and is a term that has been much-debated, criticised and sometimes even hard to distinguish.

Marrying gastronomy with that of an English pub, gave rise to the phenomenon of the Gastropub. It evolved from the humble public house and was brought about to meet the needs of the modern consumer.

The Gastropub presents the best of both worlds, combining pub culture with restaurant dining. Traditional pub grub favourites are still offered side by side with more robustly flavoured and upscale versions of popular meals that include shepherd’s pie, pasties, burgers and fish and chips. Appealing to a more discerning clientele, these Gastropubs offer a high quality of food, inspired by the original tried and tested favourites of the pubs, revamped with exotic meats and impressive garnishes.

With the increasing amount of pubs investing into food to compliment their wet-sales and jumping on the food bandwagon, some of us have been left wondering what is the difference between a Gastropub and a pub ? Is it the fact that a Gastropub sets itself apart ( and indeed above ) a pub by offering a well-sourced and seasonal fresh meals in an intimately friendly environment ? or is it the elegant sophistication that comes tied with a microbrewery of lager ? Perhaps it’s a bit of both.

Stephen Bull is top chef in London who owns a gastropub and predicts that ‘The future is very bright for the gastropub – it’s the British bistro,’.. and many agree that the reason behind its remarkable success comes down to the fact that a Gastropub is typically a high-quality version of the traditional English Pub offering a more relaxed and welcoming dining experience with a relatively affordable menu that serves gourmet British style cooking alongside an extensive and usually impressive choice of ales.

While there are many fine Gastropubs in and around London, one of our personal favourites are “Smiths of Smithfields” located right outside Smithfields Market in Farringdon, London’s only working meat market. Delicious food, design and atmosphere with a distinct urban Gastropub look and feel is what is on offer here.

Farringdon lies towards the east of London and offer a wide range of serviced apartments that are within walking distance from the Old Smithfields Market and many other top sights and attractions.
Driving Tips for travellers visiting the UK

If you’re planning to get in the driving seat of a car in the UK then make sure you are aware of the systems and laws in place to ensure you have a safe and sound journey on the road. First of all, you will notice that in the UK, cars drive on the a left hand side, similar to Australia, India, Japan and the US Virgin Islands.

Take it slow and don’t rush to spin around the centre of town specially if you are used to the right hand side drive, because you might not get very far. Also try renting an automatic car to help you adjust to the new settings, although these can be priced higher than stick-operated vehicles. Make sure you check that you have a valid driving licence that covers the type of vehicle that you are driving and an appropriate insurance with valid road tax. Also make sure you don’t drive while using your mobile phone as this is against the law.

Next point to keep in mind is the metrics. Road distances are shown in miles or yards (MPH) and so are the UK Speed Limits. When filling petrol (gas) note that prices are listed in litres, and it takes about five litres to fill one British gallon so consider the distance you have to travel and whether it might just be cheaper taking another mode of transport like a coach or train.

Parking your car shouldn’t be too difficult if you read the signs. Most parking lots operate on a “Pay and Display” method where you pay for the duration you need to park at a nearby parking machine and place the ticket on the dashboard clearly visible to the parking warden. Besides the obvious “No Parking” signs you should also be aware of the yellow lines painted on the street. Double yellow lines = No parking ever ; Single yellow lines = Parking generally NOT allowed except during un-restricted hours only, usually after 6pm, check the sign ; Dashed yellow lines = parking allowed, but still check the signs for any time restrictions and still may need to 'pay & display.' ; No lines at all = you can park for free.

It is also advisable to always look out for speed limit signage. On motorways, the speed limit is usually 70mph, but on country roads it slows down to 40 or 50mph. And once you enter a village, the speed limit is never more than 30mph -- slower limits are posted. Watching your speed can help you avoid unnecessary tickets from Speed Cameras that are almost everywhere and take a picture or your car and plate while speeding. If you need to overtake or pass a car, keep in mind that you are only allowed to overtake on the right or the ‘fast’ lane. The "slow" lane is the outside (or in this case, the far left) lane. This is also the lane where you'll need to make your exits. Exits are very clearly marked and you'll have plenty of warning before your exit approaches.

Roundabouts are another UK road phenomenon that can sometimes be tricky for foreign visitors. A roundabout is a circular junction where all drivers give way to traffic on their right. All you need to keep in mind to slow down when coming to one and 'give way' to traffic already on the roundabout and If there's a car already on the circle, they have the right of way. Generally British drivers don’t yield, they ‘Give Way’ to traffic already on the road and acknowledge the courtesy of another driver letting you pass by a wave of thanks.

And finally the Congestion Charge. This is a charge imposed by the Transport of London body on most vehicles travelling into Central London on weekdays. The daily charge is £10/day and must be paid for in advance or before midnight that day in order to avoid a penalty. With superb public transport links in and around Central London, it is wise to avoid using a car unless you really need to, and use buses and taxis or underground trains.

With these basics, you should be able to get yourself on the go in no time. There is so much to see and explore in the UK from bustling city town centres, splendid country landscapes, quaint villages and charming English towns and a good road trip around England will surely be an enjoyable and unforgettable lifetime experience.

The festival of Britain continues its 60th anniversary celebrations at the South Bank Centre with a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a British seaside holiday right here in the capital. A temporary urban beach has been set up along the Queens Walk on the banks of the River Thames which is part of the outdoor attractions taking place during the festival. The Festival of Britain has been celebrating British art and culture since 1951 and has planned a series of exciting events this year infused with a touch of British nostalgia including live performances, interactive talks, themed weekends, retro fun-fairs, intriguing landscapes and creative exhibits.

The South Bank Centre is divided into four 'lands', which take as their inspiration themes from the 1951 South Bank exhibition - People of Britain, Land of Britain, Sea and Ships, Power and Production -and feature work by artists, designers and curators including Andy Holden, Michael Marriott and Colette Bailey. Amongst the favourites are The "Appearing Rooms" fountains by Jeppe Hein's, a huge straw fox, a giant seagull and the delightfully bright and colourful artist-commissioned beach huts (seen in the above picture) lining the Thames in front of the Royal Festival Hall.

Pearly Kings & Queens of London

The city of London has always been a trading centre with unique and famous markets that have laid the foundations for its commercial growth and thriving economy. Markets like Covent Garden, Spitalfields, Portabello, Borough, Billingsgate, Smithsfields all supplied a lifeline to the city by providing the basic necessities for every household. The Pearly Kings and Queens or “The Pearlies”, played an important role in daily London market life from as early as the 11th Century.

Having originated in the 18th Century from the “Costemongers’ or street vendors, these traders used to sell fruit, veg and a variety of wares from their barrows to the poor and faced a gruelling fight for survival in the marketplace usually harassed by authorities. Business was never easy, so in an effort to stand out from the other market traders, the costermongers wore a distinctive style of attire that involved decorating their trousers, seams and waistcoats with rows of pearl buttons that, at the time, arrived by cargo from Japan (so it is believed). It was these “flashie” costumes along with their cheeky banter and infectious flamboyance that won them custom. As the city grew, costermongers began to choose leaders of the pack or “Coster Kings & Queens” who were elected to stand up for their rights and safeguard their territory. This new class of royalty were highly regarded for their strength and endurance and continued their legacy by passing on their inherit titles to their children.

However The “Pearly Suit” of the Costermongers really underwent a complete transformation when it was discovered by Henry Croft, a road sweeper and rat-catcher in the 1880s, who was inspired by the crowd pulling power of the accessory clad outfits and used this inspiration to create a costume completely adorned in pearls to raise money to help the poor and underprivileged. It was an instant success and combined the goodwill gesture of helping others with the pearly spirit and hearty entertainment.

The Pearlies went on to raise funds for many more institutions and honourable causes and are today fondly admired for being one of London’s long standing traditions, having contributed significantly to society, tourism, heritage and fashion. Pearly Kings and Queens are often seen fundraising around Covent Garden Market in Central London.
Old Bailey Criminal Central Court

If the processes of law and justice take your fancy or you are just curious about the subject of criminal intent then head down to the Old Bailey Central Criminal Court in High Holborn for a chance to witness one of the 1500 serious cases being tried every year from the restricted access of the public viewing galleries.

The Old Bailey is one of the most famous criminal courts in the world and has been London’s principal criminal court for centuries. Located between Holborn Circus and St Paul's Cathedral, the Old Bailey is named on the road on which it stands which follows the line of the City's fortified wall (bailey). In medieval times, the site where the Old Bailey stands today was home to the Newgate Goal Stood, and until 1868 hangings took place in public outside Newgate itself. The original Old Bailey was built in 1539 and before being destroyed by the Great Fire was designed as an Italianate Brick Building with a open-air courtroom to minimize the spread of gaol fever which took the lives of many prisoners, judges and even the Lord Mayor at the time.

The Old Bailey we see today was designed by Edward Mountford and was opened in 1907 by King Edward VII. Inspired by St Pauls Cathedral nearby, the inside features magnificent marbled halls and a muraled dome above the court resides the statue of Lady Justice holding a sword in her right hand and weighing scales in her left.

The Old Bailey is steeped in history and has dealt with some of the most severe and high profile cases in the history of London. The oldest courtrooms of the Old Bailey are number one, two and three, and it is in within these walls that many famous people have stood trial including the likes of Oscar Wilde, The Krays and the Yorkshire Ripper.

While it is not publically a tourist attraction, the Old Bailey provides an intriguing insight into the past and present workings of the London courts and has also made an appearance in popular literature, television and film making it a very notable point of interest in the city’s heritage. In Charles Dicken's Tale of Two Cities, the Old Bailey is the courthouse named in the book where Charles Darnay is put on trial for treason.

Opening times are Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm and 2pm to 5pm. No reservations are held and visitors must be over the age of 14 years old.

The Old Bailey Central Criminal Court is situated near St Pauls Cathedral in the heart of "The City" of London.
Paramount - Centre Point Building - Tottenham Court Road

Gazing across the breath-taking 360 degree views of London’s cityscape from the 32nd floor of the Centre Point building at the epi-centre of the city at the corner of Oxford Street, it seems only obvious why the Paramount Restaurant and Bar has become one of the most chic and stylish places in wine and dine in town.

Sleek interiors and sophisticated furnishings by internationally renowned designer Tom Dixon create a discerning atmosphere that allows you to take in and enjoy a truly exceptional dining experience. But make no mistake, the food here is equally deserving of praise with a delectable selection of modern and classic British dishes created by Head Chef Colin Layfield who presents an impressive mix of A-la-carte options like pressed foie gras, double baked roquefort soufflé, veal cutlet and lemon sole as well as some genuinely mouth-watering desserts like raspberry mascarpone crème brulée, champagne sorbet and decadent valrhona chocolate puddings. Scrumptious!

Although it launched back in 2008 with a member-only restriction, The Paramount shunned its pretentious approach and opened its classy doors to the public in 2010. Mind you a dress code is still a requisite and the ambience is tinted with an elitist touch however the splendid views and sizzling cocktails set the scene for an absolutely unforgettable time especially around sunset.

Keep Calm And Carry On

The recent London Riots have momentarily dampened the mood of the city but definitely not its spirit. While these mindless and incomprehensive acts have been condemned by the government and residents of London, local communities have come together and risen above the wreckage, albeit in disbelief.

Originating from the very attitudes in which people went about their daily lives during a time of conflict and distress in Britain, the “Keep Calm & Carry On" Poster was an understatedly simple wartime propaganda, that today has transformed into a brand of its own and taken the shape of a wide range of paradoxical memorabilia and merchandise for the modern consumer. The poster was introduced by the British Government in 1939 during the Second World War in order to encourage civilians and military personnel to maintain morale and keep spirits high, but was only ever distributed in limited numbers or forgotten in storage.

The slogan was one of three distinctive designs of the time, created with the symbolic crown of King George VI set above a striking yet easily identifiable font against a bold courageous background that was designed by an unknown civil servant of whom, sadly there are no records or trace. Only two original copies are known to have survived.

Having been resurrected back to life in 2000, the poster became a victim of commercialisation and presented us with a strong motivational message and deep rooted nationalist sentiments that associated itself with a sense of nostalgic humour that is so unmistakably British. It’s message somehow seemed to resonate through all ages and backgrounds, bringing a soothing comfort to a nation in turmoil at the time and continuing to this very day to be relevant to many battling through the trials and tribulations of our modern society.

British popular culture has embraced the mantra to “keep calm and carry on” no matter what the shortcomings or downfalls, making this graphical parody one of the most iconic designs of our generation and indeed of British history and one of the greatest inspirational posters of all time.

If you are visiting England for the first time or have been here many times before and like many others, finding yourself in that never-ending predicament of which souvenir will best summarize typical England, then look beyond all the obvious tourist choices of bobby (policeman) hats, miniature black cabs and beefeater magnets. What you will truly enjoy is something with a more political and cultural agenda like the “Keep Calm and Carry On” mementos.

“Keep Calm and Carry On” merchandise can be found all around Central London in department stores, design shops and souvenir outlets. Central London also features many affordable accommodation options like Serviced Apartments and Short Stay Apartments. With Check-in-London.com, you can find a wide range of good quality and great value serviced accommodation in and around Central London in neighbourhoods like Mayfair, Marylebone, Bloomsbury, Bayswater, Kensington, Chelsea and many more.
London Street Photography – Museum of London – Until 4th September

London Street Photogrpahy is one of the major exhibitions going on at the Museum of London showcasing an exceptional collection of photographs of everyday life on London’s streets dating back to 1860. Capturing a diverse and vibrant city, these street photographs exemplify London’s character through its ever-changing street-culture. This collection of local historical photographs reflect momentary inspirations and chance encounters amidst the bustling city streets caught on camera by the likes of Valentine Blanchard, John Thomson, Henry Grant and Roger Mayne.

M&Ms World comes to London - Leicester Square

This Summer, London welcomed to Leicester Square, the first ever M&Ms store in Europe. The chocolate mega store is set to become one of the capital's “tastiest attractions” according to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, selling everything to do with the M&M confectionary and merchandise from clothing, toys, kitchenware, bedding, jewellery and of course all sizes and flavours of M&M chocolates.

Spread over four levels and covering an area of 35,000 sqft in the heart of the capital’s central district, the store is designed to mesmerize and draw you in with attractive rainbow coloured installations and interactive visual displays including a London double-decker bus, giant union jack M&Ms and even an M&M Chandelier.

What can appear to be a cross between London’s Hamleys toy store and a candy shop, is not entirely targeted at chocoholics and sweet fanatics but is also a celebration of the M&M brand coming to London, offering a fun and exciting experience for the whole family with a walk-through history timeline of the famous chocs.

A special feature that is not to be missed is the giant “Wall of Chocolate” where customers will be able to create their own custom blended M&M selection from an assortment of 22 colours and flavours while being entertained by the brand's lovable mascots, Red & Yellow.

Leicester Square is one of the main tourist hot-spots in central London and is usually the main backdrop for movie premiers and celebrity red carpet moments making it a very popular and crowded location. It is only walking distance from Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Street, Soho and Charing Cross.Accommodation in the Leicester Square area can be expensive and the choice is usually limited to international hotel chains which is why more and more visitors are preferring to stay in Serviced Apartments that are a short distance away but offer greater value for money with the same freedom and flexibility to explore the city.

Check-in-London offers a fantastic range of serviced apartments in Mayfair, Marylebone, Bloomsbury & Covent Garden that are within easy reach of Leicester Square and many more of the city’s main sights and attractions.

Checking-in at the airport is so yesterday!

The concept of making the idea of “catching a flight” a more streamlined and indeed effortless procedure does considerably add value to the overall customer travel experience. The latest to emerge is “offsite Check-in services” allowing travellers to check-in before they reach the airport like at a railway station or hotel. Already successful in countries like USA, Hongkong and Switzerland, this style of checking-in pre-airport arrival is catching on and has even reached London.

Paddington is the first UK railway station to offer an “off-site check-in service” between Heathrow Airport and Central London via the Heathrow Express Train. The self service check-in kiosks and flight information screens allow you check-in for your flight and print your ticket before boarding the train. The facilities that have been designed to make travelling by air more appealing by giving customers the option to choose their seat and avoid the long queues for checking–in at the airport. Boasting a journey time of under 20 minutes one way, it is most certainly the quickest way to get to Heathrow Airport from Central London especially during peak hours. Presently the following airlines operate Check-in services at Paddington Station, but more will be available very soon.

Air Canada, Air France, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Czech Airlines, Finnair, Iberia, Kenya Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, United Airlines

Some of our customers, who have stayed in one of our many central London serviced apartments and short stay rentals, often use the airport check-in facilities at Paddington and have really enjoyed the benefits of having that little extra time to make the most of the city. The advantage of a central London Airport check-in kiosk is also particularly useful to corporate travellers who enjoy a quick and easy route to the airport after a business trip.

Central London areas like the Bayswater, Mayfair, Marylebone, Bloomsbury and Notting Hill have fantastic serviced apartments and are within easy reach of Paddington Station.
